On July 30, U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order to abolish the de minimis rule, which exempts low-value imports from duties.
As a result, goods that clear customs after 12:01 AM (ET) on August 29 will no longer be eligible for simplified customs procedures and will be subject to appropriate tariffs and other duties.
Previously, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA),” enacted on July 4, had scheduled the termination of the de minimis rule for July 1, 2027, but the executive order brings the end date forward by approximately a year and a half.
When importing Japanese products into the United States, shipments valued at USD 800 or less will remain duty-free until August 28.
Starting August 29, however, such shipments will be subject to standard tariffs plus an additional 15% duty.
